About the region
The Mantiqueira de Minas Region is situated in the southern part of the Minas Gerais state, nestled within the Serra da Mantiqueira mountain range. Boasting a rich legacy spanning over a century in crafting exceptional coffee, this region stands as one of Brazil’s most acclaimed coffee-producing areas. In 2011, it earned the distinction of a Protected Geographical Indication (PGI), a testament to its longstanding renown for cultivating superior coffee beans. Encompassing 25 municipalities, this area serves as a tangible embodiment of the local culture, a result of its carefully defined boundaries; strict adherence to established protocols and regulations safeguards its distinct heritage.
Within these 25 municipalities, a community of approximately 8,200 producers thrives, with a remarkable 82% of them classified as small-scale cultivators. Our origins are marked by the distinct attributes of a singular terroir and pioneering methodologies that have yielded extraordinary and unforeseen coffee varieties. This territory is uniquely privileged, endowed with a combination of factors ideal for cultivating exquisite coffee: naturally fertile soil, temperate climate, optimal elevations ranging from 900 to 1,500 meters, and consistent well-distributed rainfall throughout the year. These factors, in conjunction with the dedication and expertise of the producers, have entrenched coffee cultivation as an ancient tradition in the region.
