Nicaragua
A Special Connection
The Jinotega region of Nicaragua is home to an estate owned and operated by Desiree and Dania, fourth-generation coffee farmers who proudly identify as entrepreneurial women. This estate's history includes a challenging period when it was abandoned and deforested during the civil war of the 1980s. However, today, they have successfully preserved over 25% of the 165-hectare land as a nature reserve. The remaining land is dedicated to advanced ecological and horticultural practices, resulting in consistently high-quality coffee with impressive yields. All of this is achieved while upholding their environmental and social responsibilities.
Giving Back
Our Support for Okapa
Origin Coffee Traders has built enduring relationships with two villages in the Okappa and Bommai regions of Papua New Guinea. As part of our commitment to the local community, we provide vital support for basic health and educational needs. O.C.T. collaborates closely with local village cooperatives to fund projects, such as constructing classrooms and ensuring access to clean drinking water and sanitation facilities. In this region, coffee thrives without the use of pesticides or fertilizers and is carefully harvested annually by families in dedicated sections of the forest. We purchase the coffee fruit above the market price and offer a bonus incentive payment to the village cooperatives to enhance cultivation practices, promote sustainability, and improve the quality of the coffee fruit.
Since 2008, OCT has nurtured a robust partnership with Devon Coffee Plantation in Chikmagalur, India's premier high-grown coffee region. Our close collaboration with Roshni, one of the few female coffee farm owners in India, has been instrumental. With Roshni's expertise and collaboration, we've crafted our Merthi Mountain Honey Robusta, renowned for its unique clean, sweet chocolate flavor that distinguishes it from other robusta coffees. Each year, we import approximately 3-5 containers, contingent on the harvest, and we ensure that we pay above the C price for this coffee, guaranteeing Roshni and her team a profitable return for their exceptional coffee.
